The position is located at the University Services Building, 1551
S. Rural Road, Tempe, Arizona and provides support to all ASU
locations.
Job Description:
Plans, organizes and coordinates the fire safety and prevention,
hazardous materials and processes, safety, compliance and
monitoring activities to ensure the safety of the university
community. This includes providing consultation and guidance,
conducting audits and facility inspections, conducting training,
data management and addressing issues and suggesting remediation
steps or improvements. Works closely with Fire Safety Partners, and
Fire Prevention Officer serves as a advisor in fire safety and fire
prevention duties.
Essential Duties:
Conducts site visits at lower and moderate risk facility
inspections to audit, provide consultation to ensure fire and life
safety and compliance with federal, state, local regulations,
codes, and university requirements.
Reviews construction plans for tenant improvements that are smaller
project scope to ensure compliance with fire and life safety
regulatory requirements, codes and standards to assure compliance
prior to occupancy.
Reviews and permits lower scale special events for operational
permitting to ensure compliance with fire and life safety
regulations and code requirements.
Utilize checklists and identifies and informs the team of problems
with the fire and life safety regulations and code
requirements.
Develops and implements fire safety and fire prevention programs
and sustainability activities to support university goals.
Interprets and ensures effectiveness of specific methodology and
key performance indicators for the department including the
effectiveness of fire safety and fire prevention education.
Investigates and remediates problems with the safe and legal
handling of hazardous materials.
Communicates with customers on safety-related matters.
Reviews, interprets and evaluates compliance activities and
policies to ensure safety and recommends and/or implements required
safety changes.
Manages relationship with regulatory agencies to stay abreast of
changes, manage compliance, and ensure facility and personnel
safety.
Ensures incoming and outgoing hazardous materials inventories are
properly maintained.
Provides guidance to stakeholders to ensure fire and life safety
measures are taken, including proper handling and storage of
hazardous materials.
Enforces procedures and works with other employees in how to manage
data and operate specialized equipment, such as devices used for
fire inspections.
Maintains safety databases using various information systems or
user-specific software.
Conducts accident investigations and recommends solutions and best
practices by communicating verbally or in writing with the
stakeholder.
Serves as a member of the department emergency response team and
participates in emergency drills and actual emergencies.
Stays abreast of current and proposed changes in federal, state and
industry regulations and requirements.
Assists with fire safety and fire prevention education
programs.
$60,000 - $70,000.
Desired Qualifications:
Willing to be endorsed by ASU to be appointed Fire Inspector by the
AZ dept of forestry and fire management with NFPA or ICC
Certifications for Fire Extinguisher Technician, Fire Plans
Examiner, and/or Fire Inspector II.
Working Environment:
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office
setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and
manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying
lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25
pounds.
Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities,
which may include and/or are subject to resolution of
conflicts.
Position requires working in various buildings, properties and
construction sites involving rough terrain, limited access using
stairs or ladders to access above grade and below grade level areas
to include confined spaces in order to inspect and verify fire and
life safety related system compliance.
Understands operating principles and applications of emergency
response equipment and is capable of using equipment in the field
during emergencies or while covering for staff that may be
absent.
Ability to lift and transport up to 50 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of experience appropriate to
the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of
experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills
and abilities have been achieved.
